Heliotherapy
Heliotherapy consists of exposure to daylight or to
specific wavelengths of light using polychromatic polarized light, lasers,
light-emitting diodes, fluorescent lamps, dichroic lamps or very bright,
full-spectrum light. The light is administered for a prescribed amount of time
and, in some cases, at a specific time of day. Light
therapy is thought to affect brain chemicals linked to mood, easing SAD
symptoms. Using a light therapy box may also help with other types of
depression, sleep disorders and other conditions. Light therapy is also known
as bright light therapy or phototherapy. Heliotherapy
was indeed considered to be the most successful treatment for infectious
diseases from the late 19th to the mid-20th century.
