Lillian Grace's story: The case for removing half of a baby's brain
A beautiful girl named
Lillian Grace was born in December of 2011. Little did this little
angel know that she was facing a condition called Polymicrogyria. It’s a
developmental malformation of the brain marked by an excessive number of small
folds in the tissue. It can cause neurological problems, epileptic seizures,
developmental delays, vision loss and muscle weakness or paralysis. So at 8 months old, her parents took Lillian to a
pediatric neurologist for MRI scans of her head. The parents’ fears were
confirmed when they saw the results. Depending
on the severity of the condition, it can be treated with medication or surgery,
that’s what the doctor told the parents. They had to find out the cause of it.
In August 2013, Lillian Grace underwent
the 8-hour procedure at the hands of Dr. Daniel Curry, a pediatric
neurosurgeon, and his team at Texas Children’s Hospital. Lillian Grace recovered in the neurosurgery and
inpatient rehab wings for several weeks following surgery, and each day, seemed
to show signs of improvement. From some peripheral vision loss and weakness on
the left side of her body, Lillian Grace’s family has seen only improvements
since undergoing the radical procedure. What I think about this story is the
family is really blessed because there were little chances Lillian was going to
survive but it was either surgery or letting her pass away from the several
seizures she was having. That baby went through so much but yet is living a normal
life thanks to god. In my opinion in cases like this you just have to pray and leave
everything to God because he knows what his doing.
